Minority Institution Manufacturing Alliance
The National Minority Manufacturing Institute (NMMI) is supporting the formation of an alliance with the Minority Institution Manufacturing Alliance (MIMA). This initiative is focused on garnering the support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Institutions with engineering curricula in manufacturing and research to develop technical services and support NMMI’s realization of its Core Values and support to its Members.

HBCUs have especially played a major role in producing the nation’s African-American engineers. Though they enroll less than ten percent of engineering students in the country, they produce more than a third of the nation’s African-American engineering graduates. In addition, several of these institutions are involved in research with corporations and government agencies creating and developing manufacturing technologies that contribute to the nation’s productivity and product/process innovation. As the country continues to compete in a global manufacturing economy, industry and government are seeking more innovative ways to reduce manufacturing costs and improve quality. Many of these opportunities are within reach and the capabilities of HBCUs with strong manufacturing engineering programs, currently addressing many of the challenges of material processing and composites, computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), machining, manufacturing information systems, simulation modeling, and supply chain logistics.
