OVERVIEW > History
Developed by its current President and Founder,
NMMI began as a pilot project of the South Carolina
Manufacturing Extension Partnership (SCMEP) to
support minority manufacturing development in
South Carolina. The project was funded by SCMEP,
U.S. Department of Commerce’s (DOC) National
Institute of Standards and Technology’s
(NIST) Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP),
DOC Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA),
and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
At NIST-MEP headquarters, the model became a national
demonstration model and evolved to NMMI’s
founding in 2003 following expanded private and
public sector support.

Today, NMMI is the only national organization
exclusively focused on the development of the
value-added Minority Manufacturing base in America
for participation in today’s global supply
chains.
